About
Baka In Our Own Voice refers to a series of videos featuring TikTokers inserting audio of themselves saying the Japanese word "baka" into a clip of the 2017 hip hop track "20 Min" by Lil Uzi Vert. The trend, which was inspired by previous anime edits of the word being used, became popular in late August 2020.
Origin
On August 19th, 2020, TikToker devinbui uploaded the earliest example of adding a TikTokers own voice to the song "20 Min" (shown below). The video gained over 603,800 likes in a week.
Precursor
In early July 2020, TikTokers began adding anime edits to the Lil Uzi Vert song which included a character saying the word "baka" (shown below). Baka means "fool" or "idiot" in Japanese and is a common anime trope.
Spread
On August 19th, 2020, TikTokers abbyisarodent and isenpaai uploaded popular versions of the Baka trend (shown below, left). The video garnered over 698,000 likes and 1.1 million likes respectively in a week. The next day, TikToker wh0.nia uploaded comedic take on the trend and accumulated over 880,500 likes in six days (shown below). StayHipp[1] published an article on the trend.
