Bad Bunny Throws Phone, also known as Bad Bunny Lanza el Teléfono, refers to a 2023 viral video of Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny throwing a fan's cellphone when she was trying to take a selfie with him. The video subsequently sparked controversy as many online expressed shock or made memes referencing it, sparking a viral debate among many internet users on Twitter, TikTok and other platforms as people supported or criticized his actions. Additionally, many believed that The Simpsons predicted it due to a music video Bad Bunny made with the show in which he took Homer's phone and broke it on the ground.

Origin

On January 2nd, 2023, Twitter[1] user donfelixSPM tweeted a video of Bad Bunny walking amid fans with one woman walking next to him, positioning herself in front and then trying to take a selfie with him. Bad Bunny is then seen taking the woman's phone and throwing it into the distance, purportedly into the water. Over the course of three days, the video received roughly 14.3 million views and 11,100 likes (shown below).

Following Twitter[1] user donfelixSPM posting the video, larger and verified Twitter pages started reposting the video, generating traffic back to it as it went viral. For instance, on January 2nd, 2023, the Twitter[2] account of PopBase used the video in a tweet that received roughly 114,500 likes in three days (shown below).

On January 3rd, Bad Bunny then took to Twitter to respond to the video, writing, "La persona que se acerque a mi a saludarme, a decirme algo, o solo conocerme, siempre recibirá mi atención y respeto. Los que vengan a ponerme un cabrón teléfono en la cara lo consideraré como lo que es, una falta de respeto y así mismo lo trataré yo." Translated into English, the tweet reads, "The person who comes up to me to say hello, to tell me something, or just to meet me, will always receive my attention and respect. Those who come to put a phone bastard in my face I will consider it for what it is, a lack of respect and I will treat it likewise." Overall, Bad Bunny did not directly apologize for his actions. The tweet was later deleted by the rapper for unknown reasons but received roughly 406,000 likes before deletion[8] (shown below).

Before the tweet's deletion, however, Twitter users reacted to Bad Bunny's response with numerous memes. For instance, on January 3rd, 2023, Twitter[3] user WillyWonker01 copied and pasted Bad Bunny's response in order to caption an image macro of a chimp on a typewriter (shown below).

The Simpsons Predicted Bad Bunny Throwing Phone

On January 3rd, 2023, Twitter[4] user _NovelaGrafica tweeted a clip from Bad Bunny's music video[5] for "TE DESEO LO MEJOR" that featured animation from The Simpsons. In the clip Twitter user _NovelaGrafica used, Bad Bunny is seen taking Homer's phone and breaking it on the ground so that Homer can love Marge fully. Twitter user _NovelaGrafica captioned the video, "No puede ser cierto. Los Simpsons lo hicieron de nuevo. La enemistad entre Bad Bunny y los celulares:" which translates in English to, "It can not be true. The Simpsons did it again. The enmity between Bad Bunny and cell phones:" Over the course of two days, the tweet received roughly 1,800 likes (shown below).

Bad Bunny Snatches Fan's Phone in the Dominican Republic

On January 4th, 2023, the Twitter[6] account PopBase posted a video that purportedly showed Bad Bunny in a Dominican Republic club snatching a fan's phone when walking through a crowd and exiting. In one day, the video received roughly 2.9 million views and 23,100 likes (shown below).

In the replies to the tweet, multiple users shared memes and humorous reactions. For instance, on January 4th, 2023, Twitter[7] user ktlnlighter tweeted, "when i’m on a bad bunny concert and he keeps lookin at my phone," as the caption for a video of Kris Jenner holding a gun, gaining roughly 9,600 likes in one day (shown below).
