Baby Eats Camera refers to a viral video of a baby grabbing and trying to eat a GoPro camera, recorded from that camera. After receiving initial spread as one of the earliest viral examples of You Died meme in October 2017, in September 2019 the video gained popularity in lip sync edits in which it repeatedly opened and closed its mouth.

Origin

On June 3rd, 2015, YouTube user jack heyman posted a video titled "Baby VS GoPro" in which a baby crawls towards a camera, grabs it and attempts to eat it, with the video abruptly ending as the baby covers the camera with its mouth.[1] The video gained over 470,000 views in four years (shown below).

Spread

On October 4th, 2017, YouTube user The Central Scrutinizer uploaded a video titled "Dark Souls Baby Eating Camera" based on the Dark Souls' "You Died" meme. The video gained over 327,100 views in two years,[2] with a popular reupload receiving over 616,800 views in the same period.[3]

On September 24th, 2019, Instagram user ins.step posted a video of the baby repeatedly opening and closing its mouth, synchronised with lyrics of "Good Vibrations" by The Beach Boys. The edit gained over 34,500 views in six days (shown below).[4]

In the following days, this meme format gained significant spread on Instagram, with notable edits posted by papyrus.mp4,[5] liloofxd.mp4,[6] labrynth.mp4[7] and other creators.

Pop Cat

Pop Cat refers to a series of videos in which use two images of a cat, one with its mouth closed, and the other photoshopped as if the cat is holding it wide open in the shape of an O. The images have been used to create videos in which the cat lip syncs various songs, similar to Baby Eats Camera memes.
