About
Babe, You OK? refers to a snowclone popular on Twitter that plays on the cliché of a person asking their significant other if they're feeling alright after noticing they're acting out of character. Common iterations include noticing the significant other hasn't eaten a novelty food item or completed famous ad campaign slogans.
Origin
While variations on "Babe, you ok?" tweets have appeared on Twitter for years, the format began becoming a popular meme in the summer of 2020. On July 20th, 2020, user @heybillierae[1] posted one of the first examples to gain significant spread, tweeting, "everything OK babe? you’ve barely touched your dinosaur chicken nuggies in japanese curry," gaining over 160 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, left). She was referring to a picture of such a food item (shown below, right).
Spread
The format grew more popular in autumn of 2020. On October 27th, Twitter user @LoveLiveContext[2] tweeted, "Babe are you ok ? You've barely even touched your Limited Edition Love Live Sunshine wafer cookies with Aqours cards :(," gaining over 60 retweets and 380 likes (shown below, left). On November 11th, user @cupcakecoaster[3] posted "Babe, are you ok? You’ve barely touched your Tokyo Disneyland exclusive Baymax curry," gaining over 800 retweets and 4,600 likes (shown below, right).
Towards the end of November, a variation that used famous ad campaign slogans as the punchline began growing popular on Twitter. On November 26th, user @shesgonestella[4] tweeted, "Babe are you ok? I said ‘auto glass repair’ and you didn’t say ‘auto glass replace’ ?", gaining over 6,000 retweets and 65,000 likes (shown below, left). On the 28th, user @norajaine[5] tweeted, "Babe, are you ok? I said ‘EA Sports’ and you didn’t say ‘It’s in the game,’" gaining over 40 retweets and 720 likes (shown below, right). These variations were covered by Daily Dot.[6]
