Spread

In January 2010, the blog was featured on GeekSugar[6] and BoingBoing.[15] The same month, news of the DMCA Claim was posted to TechDirt[7] and Ars Technica.[16] Over the course of 2010, the site was mentioned on Oddee[8], Paste Magazine[9], the LA Weekly blog[10] and fashion and culture site, the L Magazine.[11] In 2011, the blog was featured on Buzzfeed[12] and the Daily Dot.[13]

On February 1st[2], Hauge received a takedown notice from Tumblr after the microstock photography provider iStockPhoto claimed the blog was infringing on the copyright protected under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). On February 17th, Hauge initially sought a way[4] to keep the images accessible by changing the type of posts to text-only links[3], but the images owned by iStockPhoto were replaced altogether with a blank image of the site logo. soon returned to posting image posts from stock photos hosted elsewhere.

In July 2010, Hauge posted[14] an official "About" page stating the blog's stance on copyright, including a snippet of fair use law from the Copyright Act of 1976. Throughout 2011, a number of awkward stock photography themes trended in the blogosphere, with notable examples like "Women Laughing Alone With Salad," "Women Struggling to Drink Water" and "Men Laughing Alone with Fruit Salad."
