Avocado Proposal is a social fad in which people hide engagement rings inside avocados to surprise their partner with a marriage proposal.

Origin

On September 12th, 2016, Instagram [1] user @kimtrylerphotographer posted a photogram of a man proposing to a woman who is holding an avocado. They captioned the photograph "I was just minding my business photographing a senior when this literally happened right behind us. #fate #surpriseproposal #westbrookbeach #kimtylerphotography #ctweddingphotographer #kismet #engaged #avocadoproposal." In the comments, the user confirms that the ring was hidden inside of the avocado. Within a year and a half, the photo (shown below) received more than 85 likes.

One month later, Instagram[2] user @taylorselbyyoga posted picture of a man on one knee proposing with a ring in an avocado. They captioned the post, "been MIA recently but back and motivated to get back on it!! plus I couldn't help but share the BEST & most creative proposal/best day of my life in honor of 6 months until we say I do!!!! now where is the avocado emoji?!" The post (shown below, left) received more than 110 likes in a year and a half.

The following year, on December 29th, 2017, Instagram[3] user @mindful_af posted an image of an avocado holding an engagement ring. They captioned the post, "Every hippie girl’s dream proposal. #avocadotoast #avocadoproposal." WIthin three months, the post (shown below, center) received more than 610 likes.

Two months later, Instagram[4] user @fooddeco posted another image of an engagement ring in an avocado. They captioned the post, "Tag someone who should propose like this #valentinesday #2018 #avobox #vegan #proposal #💍 #avocadoproposal." The post (shown below, right) received more than 10,000 likes in less than two weeks.


On July 11th, 2017, YouTuber [5] posted a video entitled "The Avocado Proposal." The video (shown below) received more than 900 views in less than on year.

Several media outlets covered the proposals, including The Daily Dot,[6] Jezebel,[7] Today[8] and more.
