Origin

Dasha released the single "Austin" from her album What Happens Now? on streaming platforms on November 17th, 2023. The full album was then released on February 16th, 2024.[1] She posted a version of the line dance she choreographed for "Austin" to TikTok for the first time on November 19th, 2023, around the time of the single's release, captioning the post on TikTok (seen below) "line dance kinda serving but someone do it better pls."[2] The post received over 240 likes and 13,000 views in four months.

"Austin" by Dasha Lyrics

The chorus of the song, which is where the dance comes in, reads:

Did your boots stop workin'?
Did your truck break down? (Truck break down)
Did you burn through money?
Did your ex find out? (Ex find out)
Where there's a will, then there's a way
And I'm damn sure you lost it
Didn't even say goodbye
Just wish I knew what caused it
Was the whiskey flowin'?
Were you in a fight? (In a fight)
Did the nerves come get you?
What's your alibi? (Alibi)
I made my way back to LA
And that's where you'll be forgotten
In forty years you'll still be here
Drunk and washed up in Austin

Spread

The song and subsequent videos about the dance posted by Dasha circulated on TikTok through the winter, but in February 2024, more posts of people doing the dance gained traction on the platform. An early viral post of the trend was made by TikToker @itszoeyauen on February 9th, 2024, earning over 1.7 million likes and 21.7 million views in six weeks (seen below, left).[4]

Following the album's release on February 16th and the increased virality of the dance and track, Dasha posted a video (seen below, right) of herself doing the line dance in a field, which earned over 3.1 million likes and 40 million views over the course of a month.[3]

As the trend spread, posters on TikTok began to make content about the trend itself. Some of this content focused on men watching the dance videos and their girlfriends objecting to the behavior, similar to the Pour Me Another Drink trend.

For example, TikToker @ianandmariah received over 1.3 million likes and 17 million views in four days on March 23rd for posting a TikTok showing her boyfriend trying to look at her phone as she played "Austin" (seen below, left).[5] Others joked about the song helping them develop an interest in country music even though they didn't typically like the genre, including TikToker @pokemonmasterzo, who received over 817,000 likes and 6.5 million views in two weeks for posting the video (seen below, right) on March 14th, 2024.[6]
