Aura Points refers to a point system based on the fluctuation of a person's aura. Certain actions, behaviors and traits increase a person's aura while others decrease it. Many of the memes and discourse followed the phrasal template How Many Aura Points Did I Lose When X. Aura Points surfaced out of the Most Amount of Aura I’ve Used on a Level 1 meme that treated a person's aura like a video game score. The concept of Aura Points trended on TikTok and Twitter / X (among other social media platforms) in 2024, building on the virality of the slang term "aura," synonymous with a person's mystique.
Origin
TikToker[1] @aidan2funny posted the first discovered Aura Points meme on May 1st, 2024, using a POV caption and a points system to determine how much aura he lost. The video used the song "Yesterday" by vs self as the TikTok sound.[2] Over one month, the video received roughly 3 million plays and 426,000 likes (shown below).
Spread
Going into May 2024, @aidan2funny posted multiple TikToks[3][4] that used the same sound[2] and points system. Others began adding to the trend, like TikToker[5] @kerem.as45 on May 14th, 2024, who showed a "School edition," receiving over 26.3 million plays and 3.5 million likes in a month (shown below, left).
On May 15th, TikToker[6] @d1edger19 posted a video on the "Worst ways to lose aura points at school," receiving over 14.6 million plays and 2.7 million likes in a month (shown below, right).
Instagram memes surfaced during the same timeframe like on May 13th, 2024, when Instagram[7] user @darthplagiarism.exe shared an image macro with a top caption reading, "When I'm talking to somebody and my spit accidentally comes out (-1000 aura points)," gaining over 2,200 likes in a month (shown below, left).
On May 14th, Instagram[8] user @00piumunderground posted an image macro with a knight sitting, captioned, "Didnt wear all black today (-5000 aura points)," receiving roughly 29,900 likes in a month (shown below, right).
On May 23rd, 2024, X[9] user @Mlickles tweeted about an interaction with their little sister, reading, "I was explaining something, stuttered and my little sister openly said 'negative aura points,'" receiving over 38,000 likes in a month (shown below, left).
On June 20th, X[10] user @s1llybrowngirl tweeted, "how many aura points did i lose when i tried to fit in a group while they clearly didn't gaf abt me," receiving roughly 85,000 likes in six days (shown below, right).
