About

August 27th is a viral date on TikTok based on a cryptic post by TikToker @stfusamantha in July 2020. The creator of the meme later stated that the date has no meaning and the post was just an attempt at being "weird."

Origin

On July 6th, 2020, TikToker @stfusamantha posted a video of herself with a purple filter over the image with the text overlaid on her face, "If this is on your FYP, congratulations. You've been chosen. Remember the date August 27th. It's important." The post received more than 6.1 million views, 1.2 million and 79,000 comments in less than one month (shown below).

Spread

Following the release of the video, people on TikTok began posting that they did not understand the date nor why people were spreading the meme. TikToker @kierasworldx posted a video about it, which received more than 193,000 reactions and 13,000 comments (shown below, left). Others used it for their own means, attaching it to other memes, ideas, jokes and more (examples below, center and right).

@stfusamantha responded to the spread of the meme. They said, "I literally had no idea that'd blow up like that lmfao that wasn't even the goal. I just wanted to make a weird video" (shown below).[2]

On July 11th, New York Times reporter Taylor Lorenz tweeted about the meme. She wrote, "The main consensus now is that #August27 is a day to manifest whatever you want and it will come true" (shown below).

By the end of July, the #August27th hashtag had more than 8 million views on the platform.[1]

Several media outlets covered the meme, including Distractify,[3] PopBuzz[4] and more.
