The trend was popularized in January 2024 and is inspired by a viral video by TikToker @katherinee_310 where she films her fiance attempting to clean spilled hot sauce by simply wiping it with a paper towel, implying there are more efficient ways to clean the spill, such as scooping it with the paper towel.

Origin

On December 26th, 2023, TikToker^[1] @katherinee_310 posted a video captioned, "I dropped some hot sauce and I asked my fiance to clean it and this is how it went." The video shows her fiance attempting to clean the hot sauce by rubbing it with a paper towel, causing it to smear around the counter initially until it is finally cleaned after around 30 seconds (shown below). The video's description reads, "He Stresses Me Out, This Is Why I Do The Cleaning." The video gained over 32 million views in three weeks (shown below).

The video inspired a trend in late December 2023 that carried through to January 2024 where women deliberately spill hot sauce, ketchup or a similar substance on a countertop and film their significant others cleaning the spill. On December 31st, 2023, TikToker^[2] @noelmulk0 posted a video where their fiance cleans a spill, garnering over 1.4 million views in two weeks (shown below, left). On January 6th, TikToker ^[3] @haleyxmichael posted a video following the trend that gained over 122,000 views in two weeks (shown below, right).

On January 16th, TikToker^[4] @audsje9 posted a video of her boyfriend taking part in the trend, in which he tries to clean the sauce with his bare hand, garnering over 1.1 million views in a day (shown below).
