About

ASCII Stomach refers to ASCII Art representations of stomachs on Twitter which are filled with various items, represented by emoji, depending on the context of the joke the person is making. While starting as the snowclone "Me: I want a flat stomach," it later branched off to become the snowclone "My Mom When She Was Pregnant With Me."

Origin

On March 21st, 2019, Twitter user @itsJWolfe[1] tweeted the first example of the stomach, with the caption "I want a flat stomach," followed by a representation of a stomach filled with junk food emoji. The tweet gained over 199,000 retweets and 738,000 likes (shown below).

Spread

Over the following days, the format spread across Twitter. Some popular posts include a tweet by @EmperadoraKasi that gained over 3,800 retweets and 7,800 likes (shown below, left) and a tweet by @meufmanga that gained over 900 retweets and 3,400 likes (shown below, right).

Others used the format in more creative contexts. For example, a tweet by @ragulius gained over 380 retweets and 2,300 likes and a tweet by @medievalizst gained over 60 retweets and 370 likes (shown below, right).

My Mom When She Was Pregnant With Me

After spreading with food for several days, some users took the format and applied it to the caption "My mom when she was pregnant with me," using emoji to make an often self-deprecating joke about themselves. On March 24th, Twitter user @pant_leg[2] made the joke using the emoji sheriff, gaining over 53,000 retweets and 314,000 likes (shown below, left), starting the "My Mom When…" series. User @C_Millz6 also helped popularize the format, gaining over 40,000 retweets and 314,000 likes (shown below, right). The tweets were covered by Mashable.[3]
