ASCII Normal Heart Rate is a comparative phrasal template that expresses one's excitement caused by the meme's subject through a series of text characters (ASCII art) that are comprised to resemble a medical cardiac rate monitor

On December 5th, 2010, Twitter [1] user @J_Owens92 tweeted[1] a ASCII art comparison between the user's normal heart rate and their heart rate when they see someone that they are romantically interested in (shown below).

Spread

Several weeks later, on January 1st, 2011, Twitter[2] user @LMAOTeenThings tweeted a similar variation (shown below).


On January 16th, 2019, Twitter[3] user @thekeating5ive tweeted a variation about the television series How to Get Away With Murder (shown below, left). That day, the official Twitter[4] account for NBC's television broadcasts of the professional basketball team the Boston Celtics tweeted a version about the team. The post received more than 90 retweets and 600 likes in less than on six months (shown below, center).

Several months later, the official Twitter account for the television series Killing Eve tweeted[5] a version about the series. The post received more than 240 retweets and 1,400 likes in three days (shown below, right).

Shortly following the Killing Eve post, the official Twitter brand Twitter account caused the format to go viral by tweeting a variation of the meme.[6] The post received more than 20,000 retweets and 75,000 likes in two days (shown below).

Several media outlets coverd the meme, including Mashable, [7] PopBuzz[8] and more.
