As Soon As You Hear The National Anthem refers to a snowclone parodying National Anthem defenders in the #TakeAKnee debate. The snowclone begins, "I might lose followers over this, but it needs to be said. I find it extremely disrespectful when people don’t stand for the national anthem." It then states "As soon as you hear X, you better be out of your fucking seat" with X replaced with various humorous lyrics.

Origin

On November 10th, 2020, Twitter user @WONDERHOIZ^[1] posted, "I might lose followers over this, but it needs to be said. I find it extremely disrespectful when people don’t stand for the national anthem. As soon as you hear 'Mou sukuenai sukurabu bakari no burupen ja' you need to be OUT of your fucking seat," gaining over 50 retweets and 950 likes (shown below). The lyrics are from "potatoになっていく."^[2]

The tweet started a long string of quote tweets in which people added their own variations on the theme with other humorous opening lyrics. For example, user @linkara19^[3] tweeted the joke with the opening lyrics to Spice Girls' "Wannabe," gaining over 90 retweets and 1,000 likes (shown below, left). User @zachhatzel^[4] tweeted the joke with the lyrics to "All Star", gaining over 100 retweets and 1,400 likes (shown below, right). The meme was covered by the Daily Dot.^[5]
