About

Armin Armout is a name pun referring to a two-panel drawing of the character Armin Arlert from Attack on Titan in which he has his arm in a titan's mouth in the first panel, labelled "Armin," and out of it in the second, labeled "Armout."

Origin

The earliest known post of the drawing appeared on May 9th, 2013 in a post by Twitter user @PIZ_GG,[1] gaining 55 retweets (shown below).

Spread

In the following years, the joke was added to and drawn in fan art. On July 16th, 2014, a third panel saying "Arm Off," referring to an event in the series where main character Eren Jaeger loses an arm, was posted to the show's subreddit[2] (shown below, left). A GIF version of the original post also helped popularize the joke, and circulated online at least as early as July 2014 (shown below, right).[3]

Artistic renderings of the joke spread on DeviantArt and Tumblr. On April 23rd, 2014, DeviantArt user Gennchou posted an artistic version of the joke (shown below, right). A post by Tumblr user deadpoolsheik drawing the pun gained over 530 notes (shown below, right).
