About

Aruging on the Internet refers to a series of image macros, expressing the reaction to escalating arguments online. The two primary variations of the meme always feature a man cracking his neck, a picture of a man cracking his knuckles and a picture of a hand hovering above the "N" key on a keyboard or the "caps lock" key, indicating that they are about to say the "n-word" or use all caps to express their rage.

Origin

On March 22nd, 2017, Twitter [1] user @0InTheSheets posted three pictures, one of a man cracking his neck, another of a man cracking his knuckles and, finally, a hand about to press "N" key on a keyboard. The pictures were captioned "When a black person is beating you in a argument," indicating that when the person arguing is losing to an African American person, they resort to using the n-word. The post (shown below) received more than 1,000 retweets and 1,7000 likes in sixmonths.

Spread

That day, Tumblr [3] pinkcookiedimples posted the pictures and @0InTheSheets tweet and received more than 22,000 notes in six months.

Shortly after posting, Twitter[2] user @JuiceAndTitties retweeted a distorted version of images with the caption "LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO." The post (shown below, left) received more than 1,900 retweets and 2,100 likes.

On September 19th, Redditor [4] FrancisGalloway posted a variation of the meme on the /r/MemeEconomy subreddit. In this variant, the hand hovers over the "Caps Lock" button. The post (shown below, right) received more than 4,800 points (97% upvoted) and 100 comments.
