Area 51 Playlist refers to a series of music suggestions for the satirical Facebook event Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us. Twitter users have shared their Spotify and YouTube playlists that consist of songs relating to outer space and the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

Origin

On June 27th, 2019, the Facebook event page, "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us" was created. By July 8th, the event page had 120,000 RSVP's. As of July 25th, there were more than 1.8 million RSVPs by Facebook users.

The first instance of the "Storm Area 51" event intersecting with popular music was on July 12th, when music publication, Ones to Watch had tweeted^[1] "What if we made an area 51 raid playlist" (shown below).

Spread

On July 15th, Ones to Watch tweeted,^[2] "Sooooo we really did create an Area 51 Raid Playlist." Within one month, the tweet received more than 350 likes and 60 retweets (shown below).

That day, Ones to Watch^[3] published an article to their website titled, "Here's an Area 51 Raid Playlist Cause We Wanna See Them Aliens Too. "Their Area 51 Raid Soundtrack" playlist on Spotify includes Spaceman by the Killers, Space Oddity by David Bowie, and E.T. by Katy Perry and Kanye West.

On July 16th, Twitter user @katiewbr had tweeted,^[4] "petition for Katy Perry to sing E.T. at the Area 51 raid half-time." The tweet amassed more than 684,000 likes, 176,000 retweets and 700 replies in less than two weeks (shown below, left)
