Are You Wearing the Ch--, also known as Are You Wearing the Chanel Boots?, is a memorable quote uttered by the character Emily Charlton (played by actor Emily Blunt) in the 2006 comedy film The Devil Wears Prada. Online, people use the quote as a catchphrase and copypasta to express surprise over another's or their own outfit and confidence.

Origin

On June 30th, 2006, the film The Devil Wears Prada was released in the United States.[1] In the movie, the character Andy enters her office as the character Emily (portrayed by Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, respectively) is mocking her. When Emily sees Andy wearing a new pair of Chanel boots, she says, "Are you wearing the Ch--?" Andy completes the question with "the Chanel boots? Yeah, I am" (clip seen below).



Beginning in 2014, people posted the line to Twitter as the caption to images. One of the earliest includes an October 30th, 2014, post by Twitter[2] user @ceasarwar tweeted an image of a dog with black fur on its legs (shown below).

On January 1st, 2016, Twitter[3] user @OnlySerchs tweeted an image of Anne Hathaway in the film with the caption "-Are you wearing the c…-The Coppel X Jennifer Lopez boots? yeah I am" (shown below, left). This trend continued and evolved to include selfies (example below, right).



On June 17th, 2020, Twitter[4] user @ajhisnandez tweeted the image of Hathaway wearing a surgical mask. They captioned the picture, "'are you wearing the C--' 'the CDC recommended face covering because we’re still in the middle of the global COVID-19 pandemic yeah, I am.'" The tweet received more than 169,000 likes and 49,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left).

The following day, Hathaway shared the meme on Instagram [5] and received more than 635,000 likes in less than one week (shown below, right).
