About

Are You Sure You Wanna Party With The Demons?, also known as Demon Party, refers to a lyric sung by NAV in a Travis Scott song from 2016 that became a notable sound on TikTok starting in 2017. In early 2022, a slowed + reverb version of the sound then inspired ironic usage as a counter to the earlier trend where TikTokers showcased barely mischievous activities like vaping for humorous effect.

Origin

On September 2nd, 2016, hip-hop artist Travis Scott released the album Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight.[1] On September 15th, 2016, Travis Scott uploaded the track "biebs in the trap" to YouTube, in which (at the 0:48-minute mark) the featured rapper on the track, NAV, rapped, "I just poured an eight in a liter / With a white bitch sniffin' on Bieber / Are you sure you want to party with the demons?" Over the course of six years, the video received roughly 11.2 million views (shown below).

Starting in 2017, TikTokers started using the song in their videos, specifically using the aforementioned lyrics. For instance, in early December 2017, TikToker[2][3] babyariel posted two videos, the first on December 3rd, where she performed a choreographed dance coinciding with the song's lyrics. Each video earned over 2.5 million plays in four and a half years (shown below).

Spread

In late 2021, the song received increased usage on the platform following a new trend of TikTokers identifying their own character traits that others might find flawed or scandalous. Along with the earnest usage of this audio, ironic usage followed shortly after. For instance, on November 29th, 2021, TikToker[4] bella.scena posted a video that received roughly 19,100 plays over the course of six months (shown below, left). On February 18th, 2022, TikToker[5] chris_rva92 posted a video that earned roughly 62,500 plays in three months (shown below, right).

Multiple TikTokers felt the aforementioned trend was too serious, resulting in the perception of cringe. On February 10th, 2022, the TikTok[6] account felony_speed posted a video with a slowed + reverb version of the track, earning roughly 210,700 plays and 27,400 likes in three months (shown below, left). After the video, TikTokers started making ironic content with the audio. For instance, on May 2nd, 2022, TikToker[7] burgerman_blake posted a video of him and his friend pretending to vape in the school bathroom, earning roughly 2.2 million plays and 384,400 likes in four days (shown below, right).
