About

Apple Vision Pro In Public or People Using Apple Vision Pro Outdoors refers to several viral videos, posts and public reactions about people wearing the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset in public settings in the days immediately following its release in early 2024. These posts often involved mockery of the people wearing the headsets but also demonstrated the functionality of the new technology.

Origin

Apple released the Apple Vision Pro device in the United States on Friday, February 2nd, 2024 (release trailer shown below).[1] Early users started to wear and experiment with the technology over the following weekend, with posts, reviews and memes about the new technology circulating widely.

Spread

Following its release in early February 2024, a variety of videos purporting to show people in public using the Apple Vision Pro were posted and saw considerable spread, particularly on social media platforms such as X.

One of the most prominent was by X user @haig98, who posted a video on February 3rd, 2024, that appeared to show a man on the New York City subway system typing on a phantom interface while wearing an Apple Vision Pro, receiving over 43,000 likes and 17,000 reposts over the course of two days.[2]

The man in the video later identified himself in the replies to the post as tech influencer Nikias Molina and claimed that he was authentically doing work on the subway using an Apple Vision Pro (seen below).[3]

Other videos of the same type also circulated on X. For example, X user @zacalsopp posted one on February 4th purporting to show a man in London walking a robot dog while wearing an Apple Vision Pro, earning over 17,000 likes and 3,800 reposts in a day (shown below).[5]

On Reddit, the video of Molina using the Apple Vision Pro on the subway was posted to /r/interestingasfuck on February 3rd, where it received over 13,000 upvotes and 2,800 comments in two days.[4] Commenters on the post speculated that the video was a marketing stunt (seen below, top) and also argued that wearing an Apple Vision Pro in public, which sells for $3,499, was an invitation to get mugged or robbed (seen below, bottom).

These sentiments mirrored discussion on X around posts showing people using the Apple Vision Pro in public, with many speculating that these videos were set up for marketing purposes (either by Apple or by content creators looking to gain engagement) or joking about Apple Vision Pro wearers getting robbed.

On TikTok, various tech influencers posted videos of themselves using the Apple Vision Pro in public. For example, @chrisxmartinez posted a video showing himself using the Apple Vision Pro on February 4th, 2024, earning over 32 million views and 3 million likes in a day (seen below, left).[6] @barstoolsports reposted the subway video to TikTok also on February 4th (seen below, right) earning over one million likes and 13 million views in less than a day.[7]
