About

"Apologize" (or "Apologise") Posts refer to a type of discussion thread on 4chan in which the original poster asks users to settle their differences with a famous individual or group by retracting their negative opinions on said subject, such as actors or athletes whose performances either exceeded prior expectations, or were outright better than those of their successors. While most often seen on /sp/, it is most often associated with George Lucas on /tv/.

Origin

On December 16th, 2015, a 4chan user started a thread on /tv/[1] to apologize to American filmmaker George Lucas for “believing that another director could fix Star Wars”.

On December 19th, a similar thread was made on /tv/ ordering viewers to apologize to actor John Boyega for doubting his performance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.[2]

On January 3rd, 2016, two threads were created with photos of Lucas and Boyega accompanied by the word "Apologize."[3][4]

Spread

On January 2nd, 2016, a thread starting with "Apologise /sp/" with a photo of Bayer Leverkusen player Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández was created on /sp/ following his being named Bundesliga Player of the Month for the third time.[5]

Starting from January 10th, threads with a photo of Phil Fish in Indie Game: The Movie were created on /v/.[6]

On February 28th, 2016, a thread was created on /sp/[7] featuring a photo of then-Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal along with “Apologize, /sp/”, following a win over Arsenal. However, the meme remained relatively dormant until April, when following two of Real Madrid's victories, several threads ordering /sp/ to “apologize” were created, often accompanied by a photo of Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane (shown below).[8][9]

On November 19th, United States President-elect Donald Trump posted a tweet ordering the cast of the musical Hamilton to apologize for addressing Vice President-elect Mike Pence during a performance the previous evening (shown below). That day, a thread was created on 4chan's /pol/ board titled "Apologize!" in reference to Trump's tweet.[10]
