About
#ApeshitChallenge is a hashtag which people use to spread videos of themselves or others imitating Beyoncé in a scene from the music video for her and Jay-Z's song "Apeshit" by draping themselves in a sheet and flailing themselves and the sheet about.
Origin
On June 16th, 2018, the Carters (Beyoncé and Jay Z) released Everything Is Love, a joint album intended to follow their previous respective works, Beyoncé's Lemonade and Jay Z's 4:44, on Tidal The video for the album's first single, "Apeshit." Within three days, the video (shown below) received more than 18 million views.
In a portion of the video, Beyoncé is in a long elegant gown of which she grabs the sides and flails about.
Spread
The day the video was released, people began to imitate the moment using a fitted sheet. For example, Instagram user derrickdowneyjr posted his interpretation of the dance that day, gaining over 5,900 views (shown below).
Over the following weeks, the hashtag spread on Instagram and Twitter as people posted their own interpretations of the dance. Some popular examples include a version by @TimxKardashian that gained over 1,200 retweets and 4,000 likes (shown below, left). Another popular example tweeted by @chloexhalle gained over 4,000 retweets and 15,000 likes (shown below, right).
The challenge was covered by Twitter Moments,[1] Mic,[2] Mashable,[3] and others.
