Another Day of Thanking God is a series of image macros depicting characters, most often Vagabond character Musashi Miyamoto, holding their hands together in prayer, captioned with the snowclone "Another day of thanking god for not making me an X fan." The meme gained popularity in late May 2021 as a way of making fun of fans of various franchises, with an altered version "Another day of thanking god for making me an X fan" also gaining popularity.

Origin

The exact origin of the meme format is unconfirmed, but on May 4th, 2021, Instagram^[1] user dankpissu posted the earliest found meme that paired an image of a praying man with the caption "Another day of thanking God for not making me a," with the post gaining over 2,000 likes in one month (shown below). A May 5th, 2021, repost by Facebook^[2] page Daily Memes for Stupid Teens received over 1,500 reactions and 560 shares.

Spread

Starting in early May 2021, the format gained viral spread among South Asian and South-East Asian users on Instagram and Facebook. On May 6th, 2021, Facebook^[3] page Memes in my DNA reposted the earliest found meme that used a stock image of a man praying at sunset (authorship unconfirmed, meme shown below, left). The post received over 270 reactions and 130 shares in one month. The image (shown below, right) has circulated online since it was uploaded to iStock^[4] stock image website in December 2011.

A number of posts using this and other images of humans praying and captioned with the snowclone achieved viral spread in early and mid-May 2021. For example, on May 9th, 2021, Instagram^[5] page tube.indian reposted a same-day meme by Instagram^[6] user nickknation__, with the repost gaining over 29,000 likes in one month (shown below, left).

Prior to May 17th,^[7] an unknown user posted a version of the macro captioned "Another day of thanking God for not making me a League player," referencing League of Legends (shown below, left). The post achieved viral spread shortly after. For example, a May 18th repost by Instagram^[8] page inhalemybees gained over 24,300 likes in two weeks. A May 25th, repost^[9] in the /r/196 subreddit gained over 3,200 upvotes in one week.

Prior to May 23rd, 2021,^[10] an unknown user made the first version of the meme using a manga panel of Vagabond protagonist Musashi Miyamoto praying, captioned "Another day of thanking God for not making me a Naruto player" (shown below, center). The panel was circulated online since a viral December 2015 post by Tumblr^[11] user bushidoblues. On May 27th, 2021, Facebook^[12] page Eric's Creamy Memes posted an edit of the Naruto meme, recaptioning it using an official League of Legends artwork. The post (shown below, right) gained over 3,700 reactions and 6,500 shares in one week.

In the following days, the League of Legends image macro gained viral spread on Instagram,^[13]^[14] Facebook and Twitter with multiple reposts.

Starting in late May, multiple versions of the meme based on the Vagabond panel of Musashi Miyamoto praying were made, including remakes. Versions in which the snowclone was altered to "Another day of thanking God for making me a" also saw use.
