Anime Girls Laughing At Anime Girl In Mud or Illya and Rin Laughing At Kuro refers to an exploitable screenshot from the anime series Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya in which the character Kuro is stuck in a pool of water or mud that makes it hard for her to move, while two other characters laugh at her from the shore. The image first became the subject of memes as early as 2017, seeing an increase in popularity on Reddit in 2021.

Origin

On July 16th, 2014, season two, episode two^[1] of Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya aired. In one scene, the character Kuro gets trapped into a "bottomless swamp pit" by Illya, while Rin and Luvia laugh at her (shown below).

The image of Rin and Luvia laughing has been used in memes since at least 2017 on its own, often as a reaction image. For example, on June 21st, 2018, Redditor u/Demo000111000 posted a link to a comment on /r/cosplaygirls^[2] leading to an image of the girls laughing with a caption, "look at this loser begging for the sauce" (shown below).

On August 28th, 2018, Redditor u/aLilHuskyPuppy posted an image combining the two girls laughing at Kuro on the top and Kuro in the bog at the bottom, with each person labeled in a joke making fun of weebs, gaining over 15,900 upvotes on /r/animemes^[3] in three years (shown below). This is the earliest known use of the specific format.

Spread

The format saw occasional use leading up to 2021 when it started to see increased popularity due to a number of viral posts. On February 15th, 2021, Redditor u/Dominic_chipa posted a meme making a meta-reference to what people might search when looking for the template (shown below). The meme was originally posted to iFunny^[6] on August 26th, 2020 by Dweaboo.

On June 14th, Redditor u/Bot1K posted a meme to /r/memes^[4] combining the anime girls laughing with Pepe on the ground from the Apu Spills His Tendies format, gaining over 165,000 upvotes in two months (shown below).

On July 17th, Redditor u/MrCicada3301 posted a version of the meme using only the laughing girls to /r/memes,^[5] gaining over 18,000 views in a month (shown below).
