Angry Hulk vs. Civil Hulk refers to two images from 2017 Marvel superhero film Thor: Ragnarok and 2019 Marvel superhero film Avengers: Endgame showing two versions of character Hulk, one in a raging roar, and other with a tame, intelligent expression. Starting in April 2019, the combination of two images has been used to illustrate various comparisons.

Origin

On November 3rd, 2017, Marvel superhero film Thor: Ragnarok premiered in the United States. In one scene, character Hulk (Bruce Banner) is shown producing an angry roar (shown below, left).[1] On April 26th, 2019, Marvel superhero film Avengers: Endgame premiered.[2] In one scene of the film, Bruce Banner, now able to retain his human personality in Hulk's body, is shown having lunch with several other characters (shown below, right).



On April 30th, Twitter user @savyeet tweeted "when me and the boys discuss eating ass vs discussing being pegged" using the two images to illustrate the comparison (shown below, left), with the tweet gaining 5 retweets and 30 likes in four days.[3] Within five minutes, Twitter user @scobesv3 made a similar tweet (shown below, right), which gained 870 retweets and 3,300 likes in the same period.[4]

In the following day, multiple users on Twitter used the format for jokes in which various activities were compared. For example, within 10 minutes after @scobesv3's tweet, user @Juuzou_Black used the format, with the tweet gaining over 5,900 retweets and 22,200 likes in four days (shown below, left).[5] On May 1st, 2019, Twiter user @NoJuiceBen_ made a post utilizing the format which receiver over 37,000 retweets and 120,000 likes in three days (shown below, right).[6]



In the following days, more post utilizing the format were posted on Twitter, Reddit and other online platforms.
