"And That's When the Big Bucks Start Rolling In" is a memorable quote uttered by the character Maurice in the 1988 comedy film Coming to America. Online, screenshots of the scene in which Maurice says the line for jokes about success in business.

Origin

On June 26th, 1988, the film Coming to America premiered in the United States.[1] In the film, the characters Prince Akeem and Semmi meet their co-worker Maurice (portrayed by Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall and Louie Anderson, respectively) during a shift at the McDonald's analog "McDowell's." When Maurice greets his co-workers, he says, "Hey, I started out mopping the floor just like you guys. But now… now I'm washing lettuce. Soon I'll be on fries; then the grill. In a year or two, I'll make assistant manager, and that's when the big bucks start rolling in."

On November 20th, 2012, YouTuber itsmerocky published the scene online. The post received more than 252,000 views in less than eight years (shown below).

In 2017, Imgflip[3] user TheOrderly shared a variation of the meme. The post received more than 2,900 views in three years (shown below, left). Following the post, others began using the template to create memes of their own.

On January 15th, 2019, Imgur[4] user hoosyourdaddyo shared a variation in which the image used is of Maurice looking at lettuce. The post received more than 26,000 views in less than two years (shown below, center)

On March 1st, 2020, the meme saw a bit of a resurgence on Reddit. That day, Redditor[2] mistermuesli used a screenshot from the scene as a reaction to a joke about an exchange with their "girlfriend's dad." The post received more than 76,000 points (95% upvoted) and 395 comments in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
