Ancient Goddess Statue vs. Modern Goddess Statue refers to a series of exploitable image macros where an ancient marble or stone statue, labeled "goddess statue," is compared to a modern day figure of an anime character or waifu, labeled "modern goddess statue." The original meme was posted to Reddit in 2021 and spread over the following years as users photoshopped new images over the originals.

Origin

On April 11th, 2021, Redditor u/SappharY posted a meme to /r/goodanimemes[1] featuring a photograph of a stone statue on the left labeled "ancient goddess statue" and an image of an anime figurine on the right labeled "modern goddess statue," garnering over 12,000 upvotes in two years (shown below).

Spread

The meme became the subject of edits over the following years. On April 22nd, 2021, Redditor u/frankdarkness posted a version of the meme to /r/goodanimemes[2] that gained over 4,900 upvotes in two years (shown below, left).
On May 4th, Redditor u/Index_Noble posted a version of the meme to /r/animememes,[3] garnering over 5,700 upvotes in a year (shown below, left). The meme was reposted by Instagram[4] user triggered.senpai on May 5th, garnering over 30,000 likes in the same span of time (shown below, right).

On May 3rd, 2022, the 9GAG Facebook[5] page posted a version of the meme featuring a 2B statue, garnering over 23,000 reactions and 1,600 shares in a year (shown below).
