Amber Heard Mercy Cosplay refers to a viral photograph of actress Amber Heard in a cosplay of Overwatch character Mercy, which she wore for Elon Musk, her boyfriend at that time. The photograph was shared by Elon Musk on X in September 2023.

Origin

On September 11th, writer Walter Isaacson released Elon Musk's biography titled Elon Musk. One part of the biography recounts the story of Elon Musk mentioning to Amber Heard, his girlfriend at the time, that she reminds him of Mercy, a blonde female support character from the 2015 video game Overwatch, reportedly Musk's favorite. Amber Heard then spent two months designing and commissioning a head-to-toe costume of Mercy so she could role-play for him (snippet shown below, left).^[1]^[2] The events took place in 2017.

On September 12th, 2023, gaming news X^[3] account Dexerto reported on the news, with the post gaining over 8,300 reposts and 105,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).

On September 12th, X^[4] user @BillyM2k quote tweeted the post, commenting, "basically every reply in this thread is some variant of “nice." The quote (shown below, left) gained over 600 retweets and 11,000 likes in two days. Later that day, Elon Musk replied to the post,^[5] confirming that Heard did dress up for him. Several hours later, on September 13th, Musk replied^[6] to the post with a photograph of Heard wearing Mercy cosplay. The post (shown below, right) received over 14,000 retweets and 87,000 likes in one day.

Starting on September 13th, multiple users on X posted viral reactions to the photograph, quoting Musk's post and referencing it. On that day, X^[7] user @BitchAssBowie posted a screenshot of a news post about the cosplay, commenting, "elon musk posting amber heard in overwatch cosplay was not what I expected to see today." The post (shown below, left) gained over 2,700 reposts and 51,500 likes in one day. Later that day, X^[8] user @growing_daniel reacted to the image with an Exploding Head meme. The post (shown below, right) received over 430 reposts and 12,100 likes in one day.

Later on September 13th, Mercy voice actress Lucie Pohl wrote used the photograph to poke fun at Musk's Tesla electric car business. The X^[9] post (shown below) received over 1,000 reposts and 10,800 likes in one day.
