About

Aku Sayang refers to the Indonesian song "Rindu Semalam" by Titi Kamal which became a TikTok meme in 2023, due to a video of a Roblox "egg" avatar dancing to the song. The dance involved the swinging of one leg and both hands slowly raising upwards. The video of the dancing Roblox egg was originally posted in 2022 for a Kumalala Savesta meme, however, it was reposted in mid-2023 with the new "Aku Sayang" song. Thereafter, many TikTokers recreated the Roblox dance in real life as well as spread more videos of Roblox characters doing the dance.

Origin

On November 10th, 2018, the song "Rindu Semalam" by Indonesian actress Titi Kamal was released.[1] A music video for the song was posted to YouTube[2] on November 9th, 2018, by the channel NAGASWARA Official Video Indonesian Music Channel, gaining over 30 million views and 374,000 likes in five years. At the video's 0:53-minute mark, the part used in the later meme trend ("Aku sayang kamu juga sayang") starts (shown below).

On December 29th, 2020, TikToker[3] @meylien.thea posted the aforementioned snippet of the song to TikTok, gaining roughly 2.8 million plays and 140,200 likes in three years. The TikToker's video created one of the most used TikTok sounds[4] associated with the trend, amassing over 185,600 posts in three years. The sound predominantly gained usage in May 2023,[5] leading to the eventual Roblox meme.

On July 19th, 2023, two TikTokers,[6][7] @its_kai0.0k and @anhdepzai28, posted the same video which used the "Aku Sayang" snippet and a video of a Roblox "egg" avatar dancing, gaining roughly 4.2 million plays and 5.2 million plays, respectfully, over the course of two months (@its_kai0.0k's TikTok[6] shown below, left). The original video of the Roblox "egg" dancing was posted by TikToker[8] @phonks__ on April 24th, 2022, using a "Kumalala Savesta" sound, gaining roughly 1 million plays and 112,000 likes in one year (shown below, right).

Spread

Going into July and August 2023, various TikTokers started to spread similar Roblox videos. For instance, on July 22nd, 2023, TikToker[9] @your_boy_allen889 posted a video of two avatars doing the dance, gaining roughly 496,700 plays and 44,100 likes in two months (shown below, left). On July 25th, TikToker[10] @clowning_everyone posted a What's On Your Mind? video using cropped versions of @your_boy_allen889's TikTok,[9] gaining roughly 493,800 plays and 88,300 likes in two months (shown below, right).

In turn, TikTokers started to recreate the Roblox dance in real life, such as TikToker[11] @avixenm on August 5th, 2023, gaining roughly 6.5 million plays and 540,200 likes in one month (shown below).
