AI-Generated Commercials are television-style advertisements for brands and generic products generated using a combination of artificial intelligence programs, including ChatGPT, MidJourney and various AI Video programs. AI-generated commercials became increasingly popularized on sites including YouTube, TikTok and Twitter throughout April and May 2023, with an AI-made beer commercial and an AI-generated commercial for a pizza place called "pepperoni hug spot" notably going viral.

Origin

One of the earliest notable AI-generated commercials was posted by YouTuber^[1] Pizza Later on April 24th, 2023. The advertisement is for a fictional pizza place called "Pepperoni Hug Spot" and was created using ChatGPT for the script, Midjourney for the images, Runway Gen2 for video clips, ElevenLabs for voiceover and SOUNDRAW AI Music for the music. The video gained over 754,000 views in a month (shown below). The video was also posted to /r/midjourney^[2] by u/PizzaLater that day, garnering over 10,000 upvotes in the same span of time.

Spread

Over the following weeks, numerous other AI-generated commercials were uploaded online. On April 28th, 2023, YouTuber^[3] AI Lost Media posted a commercial for a product called "pizza nuggets" that gained over 363,000 views in a month (shown below, left). On April 29th, YouTuber^[4] Welcome.AI posted a beer commercial made with AI, garnering over 504,000 views in the same span of time (shown below, right).

The AI beer commercial gained viral spread shortly after it was initially shared. For example, on April 30th, TikToker^[5] @realwholesomechannel posted it, garnering over 5.2 million views in two weeks. On May 2nd, Ars Technica^[6] reported on the video's virality. On the same day, Today^[7] then reported on the pizza nuggets ad. On May 2nd, AI Lost Media posted another ad to YouTube^[8] for a restaurant called "Burger Blast," garnering over 320,000 views in two weeks (shown below).

On May 4th, Pizza Hut Canada made a post on Instagram^[9] announcing that on May 5th, they would transform their location at 922 Bloor Street W into a real Pepperoni Hug Spot (shown below).
