AI '90s Yearbook Trend refers to a trend in which social media users utilize an AI-generation app called Epik to alter some images of themselves such that they'll resemble photos from an American high school yearbook. The trend was popularized by K-pop idols and later grew popular on TikTok.
Origin
The AI Yearbook filter was created by Epik.[1] It's unclear who started the trend but it was popularized by K-pop idols on social media starting around September 27th, 2023. Popular idols to have participated include Sooyoung from Girls Generation[2] and Jeongyeon from TWICE[3] (examples shown below).
Spread
As the trend began spreading, it gravitated towards TikTok, where users posted slideshows with their photos. On September 30th, 2023 user @doseofrx started the trend on the app, gaining over 32,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). On October 2nd, user @heyitsmorenaa posted an example that gained over 657,000 likes in one day (shown below, right).
Guides on how to perform the trend were posted on sites including The Chainsaw,[4] Lifestyle Asia[1] and Philstarlife.[5]
