Agradecido Con El De Arriba is a verse from the song "Mi Amigo El De Arriba" from the Mexican group Los Inquietos Del Norte that became the subject of memes in February 2020. The verse, which translates to Grateful To The One Above, is used in situations perceived as God showing up at the time of greatest need. The meme is featured in image macro memes and also became popularized on TikTok in lip-dub skits.
Origin
On November 9th, 2012, the Mexican group Los Inquietos Del Norte released the official music video of "Mi Amigo El De Arriba" on their YouTube[1] channel. The video tells the story of the singer until he reached fame, thanking God by saying "Grateful To The One Above." In 11 years the music garnered 294 million views and 1.1 million likes (seen below).
Spread
The phrase became popular on February 3rd, 2020, when YouTube[2] user Bigmarzshitposthing5333 posted a parody video of Thurston Waffles with the "Mi Amigo El De Arriba" song playing at the end. The video (seen below, left) garnered 66,050 views and 2,000 likes in three years. A few months later, on July 4th, 2020, a version of the meme featuring El Chavo character Quico with his arms stretching to the sky praising a figure of Jesus Christ was posted to YouTube[3] by Rogamermasterjuegosclipsym6763. The video (seen below, right) received 97,088 views and 2,200 likes in three years.
After the videos gained virality on social media, image macro versions started to show up on meme pages across the internet. For instance, a version of the "Gracias a Dios nací en Latinoamerica" featuring Pratick Star was posted on Facebook[4] on March 15th, 2021, by mercedes.ac.315. (seen below)
On TikTok, the phrase is used in lip-dub skits and parody videos. For instance, TikTok[5] user @soydanielvargas dueted a skit about the moment a girl breaks up with a boyfriend and her brother thanking God for it. The video (seen below, left), uploaded on January 21st, 2021, garnered 1.3 million plays and 332,600 likes in two years. TikTok[6] user @edgar.seg shared a meme of Michael Scott from The Office listening to the song with the caption "Me in the Holy Week playing the only Christian song I know." The video (seen below, right), uploaded on April 6th, 2023, received 1.9 million plays and 166,000 likes in six days.
