The Adventure Time Coma Theory is a fan theory about the show Adventure Time claiming that it takes place in a boy named Finn's coma dream. The We're Not Sure If He Will Ever Wake Up meme is a redraw meme format based on a drawing that depicts the Adventure Time coma fan theory, showing Finn laying in bed in a coma dreaming about going on adventures with his dog Jake as a doctor tells Finn's mother, "We're not sure if he will ever wake up." The art first started spreading online as early as May 27th, 2012. In August 2025, it became the subject of redraws after being reposted to X / Twitter with the caption, "what are some of your favorite and least fave fan theories."

Origin

On May 27th, 2012, an Imgur^[1] user posted a piece of artwork that seems to feature the signature "Lyz H." The art looks to visualize a fan theory about Adventure Time which claims that the show takes place in the coma dream of the protagonist, Finn. The art shows Finn lying in a coma with his dog, Jake, curled up on the bed. Finn is dreaming of him and Jake adventuring. A doctor talks to Finn's mother and says, "We're not sure if he will ever wake up." The bottom of the image reads, "The terrible truth behind Adventure Time."

The image was posted to the /r/funny^[2] subreddit that same day, garnering over 80 upvotes in 13 years.

On September 21st, 2012, YouTuber^[3] CreepsMcPasta posted a video that uses the meme as its thumbnail, garnering over a million views in 13 years. In the video, the YouTuber reads a now-deleted creepypasta story from the creepypasta wiki about the so-called "Adventure Time theory," which claims that Finn attempted to take his own life after the death of Jake and the show takes place in his coma dream.

On February 24th, 2013, the meme was shared to MemeDroid,^[4] garnering over 1,600 points in 12 years.

In 2015, an alternate version of the coma theory was posted to the Spinpasta^[11] wiki.

On September 30th, 2023, X^[5] user @NopeSignal posted the meme, writing, "Can someone make an image like this but it’s Walter White dreaming about cooking meth and doing crimes, but he’s actually in a coma dying of cancer," garnering over 21,000 likes in two years.

On October 1st, X^[6] user @coattanimous posted their interpretation of the request, garnering over 5,800 likes in the same span of time.

On August 13th, 2025, X^[7] user @Diamondbolt7 posted the Adventure Time meme, writing, "what are some of your favorite and least fave fan theories," garnering over 128,000 likes and 4,100 reposts in five days.

On August 14th, X^[8] user @roqui_skylander posted a redraw of the meme referencing Skylanders, garnering over 740 likes in four days.

That same day, Instagram^[9] user lilcasper.v2 reposted a screenshot of the X post by @Diamondbolt7, garnering over 3,100 likes in four days.

On August 17th, 2025, Redditor u/Temporary_Web2645 posted a redraw of the meme to the /r/MadokaMagica^[10] subreddit that gained over 980 upvotes in under 24 hours.
