About

Adele Hiding Behind Purse refers to an image macro of pop singer Adele hiding behind her Louis Vuitton Bag during a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game in late 2021. Going into early 2022, it became a common reaction image on Twitter within LGBTQ+ and Stan Twitter circles.

Origin

On October 20th, 2021, Adele attended the Los Angeles Lakers versus the Golden State Warriors NBA game at the Staples Center in LA.[1] At one point during the game, they played one of Adele's songs, which garnered a cringing reaction from the singer who put her Louis Vuitton handbag in front of her face and grimaced. Multiple photographs were snapped of her reaction at the game, reported on by the Daily Mail[1] and tweeted by the Adele Twitter[2] fan account portaladelemed, who earned over 360 likes in five months (photos shown below).

One photograph, in particular, showed Adele looking especially dejected, having her eyes cast downward in a projection of embarrassment (shown below, left). The first meme creator to use this as an image macro in a meme was Twitter[3] user writtenbyhanna on October 25th, 2021, captioning it with, "Imagine you getting robbed and the robber say they don’t want your shoes," earning roughly 13,100 likes in five months (shown below, right).

Spread

More Twitter users started to use the image of Adele going into the remainder of 2021, recaptioning it with various phrases. For instance, on December 1st, Twitter[4] user chiddybangy posted a tweet that captioned the image, "Rent trying to make eye contact with me," earning roughly 67,500 likes in three months (shown below, left). On December 13th, Twitter[5] user yamsnmac used the image to reply to a sus statement, earning roughly 4,300 likes in three months (shown below, right).

Tweets using the image of Adele hiding behind her handbag continued to spread into 2022, receiving increased engagement in the new year. On February 24th, 2022, Twitter[6] user trestiffany11 captioned it, "Southerners, y’all don’t think the sweet tea is a lil too sweet?" in a tweet that received roughly 25,500 likes in one month (shown below, left). On March 24th, 2022, Twitter[7] user JoytotheG posted a tweet with it that earned roughly 5,800 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
