About

Abe Simpson Talking To Kids, also known as Grandpa Simpson Telling A Story or Hey Everybody, An Old Man Is Talking, is an image macro meme and memorable scene from a 1995 episode of The Simpsons in which Homer's father, Abe Simpson, starts to tell a story to kids in front of a lemon tree as the children sit down around him. On the internet, the scene has been repurposed into a series of reaction images often used on X / Twitter and other sites in humorous tweets about old trends, memes, news or stories that are considered "old."

Origin

On May 14th, 1995, The Simpson's season 6 episode 24: Lemon of Troy first aired on television, which featured a scene of Abe Simpson sitting in front of a lemon tree while talking to a group of kids.

The scene was posted on YouTube[1] on October 12th, 2015, by user @ThingsICantFindOtherwise, who titled the video "Hey Everybody, An Old Man Is Talking," amassing more than 86,000 views and 1,300 likes in nine years (shown below).

A few months later, on September 8th, 2015, an unknown uploaded a still image of the scene on Imgur,[2] amassing roughly 220 views in nine years.

Spread

The scene became a prominent image macro meme format in early 2019, as Imgur[3] user @crazy3 posted the still image of Grandpa Abe telling a story, captioning it, "You used to have to read a map for driving directions." The post (seen below) amassed over 102,000 views and 1,700 upvotes in five years.

Abe Simpson's meme gained traction again in early October 2024, especially on X and Threads, as people used the scene as a reaction image for humorous tweets about feeling old around other people.

For example, on October 13th, 2024, Threads[4] user @josie_exposie used the Abe Simpson meme accompanied by a caption on the cable channel The CW, writing, "they made teen dramas and supernatural shows, and the shows went on for +7 seasons, which were released annually." The post (seen below) received roughly 30 likes and two reposts in a week.
