"Angeleyes," also known by the lyrics Sometimes When I'm Lonely I Sit And Think About Him, is a 1979 song by ABBA from the album Voulez Vous. In May 2022, a sped-up version of the song was popularized on TikTok in lip-dub and skit videos about authentically or ironically missing something or someone and being lonely, setting images or videos relating to the lonely feelings over the song's hook. The original sound was used over 188,000 times on the platform in two months.

Origin

On July 2nd, 1979, ABBA released their song "Angeleyes"^[1] (shown below). On April 22nd, 2022, TikToker^[2] @_theaea posted a video using the song where she presents the song's lyrics while reading a book, gaining over 60,000 views in two months.

Sometimes when I'm lonely I sit and think about him
And it hurts to remember all the good times

And I wonder does it have to be the same?

The original sound for @_theaea's video went viral in May throughout June 2022 as TikTokers used it in lip-dub skits about missing someone or feeling lonely. It is unknown who started the trend. For example, on May 26th, 2022, TikToker^[3] @enbychuyya posted a video set to the song starting with the caption "our friendship was toxic anyways," followed by images of a sad CJ from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as the lyrics are presented, gaining over 3.4 million views in two weeks (shown below, left). On June 2nd, TikToker^[4] @scoobyzooms posted a similar video about the scene in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom where the brachiosaurus dies, gaining over 6.5 million views in five days (shown below, right).

On June 5th, TikToker^[5] @feelthebern511 posted a video on the trend about missing Pangea, gaining over 4.4 million views in two days (shown below).
