About

A Photo of You in January 2020 Without Imagining What Would Come, also known as Uma Foto de Você Feliz em Janeiro de 2020 sem Omaginar o Que Estava Por Vir in Portuguese, is a photo challenge launched in August 2020 on Twitter. Participants share photographs of themselves smiling in January 2020, before the coronavirus pandemic.

Origin

On August 11th, 2020, Twitter[1] user @gabrielgranadoo tweeted, "CORRENTE Uma foto de você feliz em janeiro de 2020 sem imaginar o que estava por vir" (translation: "CHAIN A photo of you happy in January 2020 without imagining what was to come"). Within one month, the tweet received more than 240 likes and 115 retweets (shown below).

Spread

Over the next 24 hours, the chain continued on Twitter, with people posting photographs of themselves earlier in the years (example below, left).

On August 29th, Twitter[2] user @miguelAbueno tweeted the first English-language version of the meme (shown below, center). Since then, the meme went viral on Twitter, with celebrities posting variations of the challenge. For example, on August 31st, Blink-182 founder Mark Hoppus tweeted[3] a version that received more than 1,600 likes and 450 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).

Some also published photographs of fictional characters just before their lives took a turn for the worse. On August 31st, for example, comedian Mike Camerlengo posted[4] an image of Rickety Cricket from the television series It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. This character descends from the priesthood to degeneration throughout the series (shown below).
