$900 a Month In Kansas City refers to parodies of a tweet showcasing an apartment one can rent for $900 a month in Kansas City, Missouri. While the tweet was intended to show off how affordable it is to live in Kansas City compared to other American metropolises, it became a phrasal template for memes as people copied the text on Twitter and posted various humorous locations from popular culture as the photo.
Origin
On June 18th, 2021, Twitter user @Merzboner[1] posted two pictures of a Kansas City studio apartment, writing, "People talk shit about the Midwest but this is what $900 a month gets you in Kansas City." The tweet gained over 1,800 retweets, 3,100 quote-tweets, and 55,000 likes (shown below).
Spread
The tweet began inspiring parodies several days after it was first posted. For example, on June 21st, Twitter user @BenFox26[2] posted a parody using the Hyrule Castle map from Super Smash Brothers Melee, gaining over 200 retweets and 1,600 likes in three days (shown below, left). The same day, user @trentandrewrld[3] posted a similar joke, using the Onett map from the same game, gaining over 700 retweets and 6,600 likes (shown below, right).
