About

500 Days of Summer "Have You Ever Heard Of" is an image macro meme based on a shot from the romantic comedy film 500 Days of Summer in which the characters Tom and Summer speak in a book store. The meme features two speech chyrons above the characters in which Tom asks Summer if she's heard of a specific piece of music or band. Summer responds with a joke, indicating that she misunderstands the question (similar to Musically Oblivious 8th Grader).

Origin

On August 9th, 2009, Fox Searchlight[1] released the romantic comedy film 500 Days of Summer. In the film, the characters Tom and Summer (portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, respectively) have a conversation over the record bin at a bookstore.

On October 7th, 2020, Twitter [2] user @theIaIaIand tweeted four images from movies that feature men and women speaking in book and record stores, including the shot from 500 Days of Summer. The post received more than 64,000 likes and 22,000 retweets in less than one month (shown below, left).

The following week, on October 14th, Twitter[3] user @rumorsfrominez tweeted the image from 500 Days of Summer and added the chyrons: "Have you heard of the Beatles?" and "Taylor Swift's gay" above Tom and Summer, respectively. The tweet received more than 3,700 likes and 550 retweets in less than one week (shown below, right).

Spread

The meme spread quickly on Twitter. Hours after the initial tweet, on October 14th, Twitter[4] user @partangels tweeted a variation in which Summer's chyron reads "eww bugs." The tweet received more than 185,000 likes and 27,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left).

That day, Twitter[5] @domenifalcon tweeted a variation in which the chyrons read, "Have you heard of music?" and "No." The tweet received more than 170,000 likes and 18,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, center).

Two days later, on October 16th, Twitter[6] user tweeted a variation of the meme, with the chyrons, "Have you heard of the Arctic Monkeys?" and "Climate change is so sad." The tweet received more than 18,000 likes and 3,000 retweets in less than one week (shown below, right).
