Origin

On November 3rd, 2022, radio station Power 106 Los Angeles posted a video in which they invited members of the rap group Blue Bucks Clan to freestyle. During DJ's freestyle, he says, "Floor seats, Crypto, I got my tool in / 4th quarter yellin' 'Why the fuck Batum in?'" The video gained over 321,000 views in 18 months (shown below).

During the 2022-2023 season, Nic Batum was a bench player and averaged 6.1 points per game for the Clippers.[1]

Spread

The lyric was widely celebrated online and came to dominate conversation about Batum's performances in NBA games. For example, on November 30th, 2022, after Batum had a strong game, his wife Lily[2] quoted the lyric with a GIF of The Rock, gaining over 50 retweets and 330 likes in 17 months (shown below, left).

However, in the 2023 NBA playoffs, Batum struggled, leading to a surge in posts featuring the lyrics. For example, on April 21st, 2023, Twitter / X user @ShaivonteBurner[3] posted a graphic with Batum's poor playoff stats along with the quote, gaining nearly 20 likes in one year (shown below, right).

The catchphrase saw a second surge in memes in the 2024 NBA playoffs following the strong performance of Batum, now a Philadelphia 76er, in his team's April 17th play-in game against the Miami Heat. Batum scored only 2.7 points per game in the 2023-24 season but had 20 in this game, many of which came in the fourth quarter, and helped the team secure a 105-104 win and make the playoffs.

This led people to quote the lyric but celebrate it. For example, on April 17th, 2024, Twitter user @clawwrld[4] posted a Lil Yachty Walkout meme featuring Batum and the lyric, gaining over 40 likes in one week (shown below).

On TikTok, user @lecasualeditor[5] posted a video on April 17th mixing the original rap with Batum highlights, gaining over 1.2 million views and 190,000 likes in one week (shown below).
