Origin

On February 22nd, 2019, Jeremy Rupke, known as "Coach Jeremy" on social media, posted a video of his son Mason practicing hockey. He put a microphone on Mason so that he could hear what he was saying on the ice. The video gained over 3.2 million views on YouTube (shown below). He also tweeted a shortened version of the video, which also gained over 3 million views.[1]

Spread

The video was widely shared on social media. Media brands like @ESPN[2] and @bardown[3] tweeted about the video, helping it reach a wide audience. NFL player JJ Watt tweeted about the video, saying "😂😂😂😂 “I’m gonna take a nap” I feel ya buddy, I feel ya. This is hilarious," gaining over 2,300 retweets (shown below, left). Actress Candace Patton tweeted the video with the caption "Me @ work," gaining over 430 retweets (shown below, right).

The video drew media attention outside of the sports world. Rupke was interviewed by the Washington Post[4] after the video saw viral success. Rupke said the idea was inspired by his son's chatter around the house, saying "We always know he’s saying random, funny stuff around the house. I just got curious, ‘I wonder what he’s saying out there on the ice.’" The moment was also covered by Twitter Moments,[5] Mashable[6] and Barstool Sports.[7]
