About

4 5 Shots refers to a TikTok dance trend that uses a drill rap song called "Whap Whap" by New York City rapper Ron Suno in 2022. The trend went viral in mid-2022 as users flashed four fingers, then five fingers and then told the camera to "Shh!" Many users with Edgar Cuts recreated the trend, like TikToker Lil G.

Origin

On May 14th, 2022, Bronx drill rapper Ron Suno uploaded to YouTube[1] the music video for his remix of the song "Whap Whap," originally created by New York rapper Skillibeng.[2] Over the course of three months, the video received roughly 4 million plays (shown below).

Three weeks prior, on April 30th, 2022, when the "Whap Whap" remix was still unreleased, Suno uploaded a snippet of the song to Triller and TikTok,[3] earning roughly 2.1 million plays and 139,900 likes in four months (shown below, left). Many TikTokers[4][5] used the song as a sound going into the summer of 2022.

The dance trend associated with the song didn't start until TikToker[6] yesssaaa44, also known as Lil G, uploaded a video on July 13th, 2022. Over the course of one month, the TikTok received roughly 10.4 million plays and 943,500 likes (shown below, center). Also on July 13th, 2022, TikToker[7] vic_42000 uploaded a video that showed an outsider's perspective of Lil G performing the 4 5 Shots dance in the parking lot. Some TikTokers saw this aforementioned video before Lil G's. In the same time period, the video received roughly 2 million plays and 314,300 likes (shown below, right).

Spread

Other TikTokers with the Edgar Haircut recreated the dance due to Lil G's influence. On July 22nd, 2022, TikToker[12] krusty.kram mimicked Lil G's dance in a video with an edgar cut that received roughly 1.2 million plays and 172,600 likes in four weeks (shown below). On July 24th, TikToker greeceenjoyer25 earned roughly 4,100 likes for a comment on the video that read, "did his son grow up," in reference to Lil G.

On July 23rd, 2022, TikToker[8] bcelltg4 posted his own iteration of Lil G's 4 5 Shots dance, earning roughly 211,000 plays and 24,300 likes in four weeks (shown below, left). TikToker bcelltg4 continued to use Lil G's sound in July 2022. For instance, his most viral 4 5 Shots TikTok[9] was uploaded on July 25th, 2022, gaining roughly 10.4 million plays and 1.5 million likes in three weeks (shown below, right).

The trend's virality snowballed going into August 2022 as more satirical and meta iterations were uploaded to TikTok. For instance, on August 11th, 2022, TikToker[10] notciaosidney used the sound with text overlay reading, "When Your Brother Is Doing This Trend At 3 Am," and showed herself peeking into her brother's room and shaking her head. The video received roughly 882,400 plays and 146,800 likes in five days (shown below, left). Also on August 11th, 2022, TikToker[11] aplaysyt uploaded a Minecraft recreation with a skin resembling Lil G. The TikTok received roughly 644,600 plays and 117,000 likes in five days (shown below, right).
