Critics of Trump use the hashtag to call for the President's removal using the 25th amendment, which outlines a president's removal from office due to the cabinet's decision that the president is unfit to serve.

Origin

The 25th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America was certified by President Lyndon Johnson on February 23rd, 1967. Section 4 of the amendment outlines the removal of the president by the vice president and a majority of " principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress" determines that the president is "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office." It reads:^[1]

Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.

The earliest known usage of the hashtag #25thAmendmentNow was posted by Twitter ^[2] user @Walter_Dragone. They responded to a tweet by the official GOP Twitter account, writing "Other than that…@POTUS is an absolute and delusional *sshole !!! #voterfraud #25thAmendmentNOW" (shown below).

Trump's "I Am The Chosen One" Comment

On August 22nd, 2019, President Trump took questions on the White House lawn, during which he discussed his relationship China and the potential trade war with the nation. In the middle of his point about how only he could make a deal with China, he turned to the sky and said, "I am the chosen one" (shown below).

Following the moment, people began to question the mental health of the president, tweeting about how he should be removed from office. That day, Twitter^[3] user @PalmerReport tweeted, "Donald Trump’s day so far: – Says he’s the “King of Israel” – Says he’s the “Chosen one” – No really, he said this shit – Attacks Denmark – Attacks NATO – Trump is the antichrist – #25thAmendmentNow – Impeachment is coming – Trump is going to prison – It’s still only 3pm." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 19,000 likes and 5,500 retweets (shown below, left).

Twitter user @ProudResister tweeted,^[4] "When the president of the United States starts declaring that he is: -- “The King of Israel” -- “The Chosen One" -- “The Second coming of God” It means he is out of his goddamn mind & it’s time for the #25thAmendmentNow." The tweet received more than 68,000 likes and 20,000 retweets in 24 hours (shown below, right).
