About
14 Year Old Girl refers to jokes made about the type of person who would react intensely to what is generally considered cheesy and overly sentimental material. Jokes about "14 year old girls" and sometimes "14 year old white girls" became popular alongside the rise of linguistic illusion memes such as S(he) Be(lie)ve.
Origin
Online, girls in their early teens have a reputation for being into overly sentimental and cheesy culture. A July 5th, 2011 submission to Urban Dictionary for "14 year old girl"[1] highlights some cliches for the age group at the time, such as "Often times, they say 'rawr'/'roar' way too much. A lot of the time, they claim to love dinosaurs and robots. Generally, they consider themselves 'scene' or 'emo'."
Spread
Over time, "14 Year Old Girls" began being associated with different aspects of culture which can be looked down upon in memes, such as horoscope culture and K-Pop. For example, Tumblr account lolwtfmemes posted a Filthy Frank meme about 14 year old girls and horoscopes on March 6th, 2019 (shown below, left). On September 18th, 2018, a 14 year old girls / K-Pop meme appeared on /r/MemeEconomy (shown below, right).
Sbeve
Jokes about 14 year old girls saw increased usage alongside the rise of linguistic illusion memes like "Sbeve," as people joked that 14 year old girls would be the type of person to think that the trick in "S(he) Be(lie)ve(d)" was deep. On February 10th, 2018, Twitter user @Scarlet4UrMa posted "some relatable quote account in 2009: s(he) be(lie)ve(d) my 13 yr old ass:", attaching a reaction GIF. The post gained over 89,000 retweets and 229,000 likes, with some comments highlighting the fact that the phrases could be interpreted as "sbeve" and "sbren" instead. On February 18th, 2018, Redditor ohsopoor posted the screenshot of the tweet in /r/im14andthisisdeep subreddit, with the highest-upvoted comment being the word "sbeve".
On March 23rd, Redditor romanziske made a similar post with a Crying Cat reaction image in the /r/dankmemes subreddit, where it gained over 80,500 upvotes in two days (shown below).
Over the following several days, similar linguistic illusion memes paired with reaction images meant to represent early-teen girls became popular on Reddit. For example, a post on /r/memes featuring Peter Griffin gained over 5,700 points (shown below, left) and a post by KoichiBardo in /r/dankmemes gained over 16,000 points (shown below, right). eBaum's World posted a compilation of these memes in a collection titled "21 Sbeve Memes That'll Hit You In The Feels If You're A 14-Year-Old Girl."[2]
