1-800-ARE-YOU-SLAPPIN is a Tumblr phrasal meme posted in reference to a comment of a video of a seal slapping itself on the chest.

Origin

On March 1st, 2017, Tumblr account Babyanimalgifs^[1] posted a video of a seal with a plush toy of a seal on its back slapping itself on the chest.

The same day, Tumblr user hemingwayjaw^[2] reblogged the post with the caption "1-800-ARE-YOU-SLAPPIN." The post currently has over 253,000 notes as of September 18th, 2017.

Spread

The phrase did not become a widely-used Tumblr meme until the summer of 2017. Meme Documentation ^[3] points out that while there were some posts referencing the phrase prior, the phrase started rising in popularity after user doglesbian^[4] created a tattoo design for the phrase on July 29th, 2017 that gained over 16,000 notes (shown below).

Following that post, "Are You Slappin?" posts began appearing on Tumblr with more frequency through August and September. A pun on the name posted by timetickticksaway^[4] gained over 8,200 notes (shown below, left). A banner by evenmoreuserboxes^[5] gained over 9,200 notes (shown below, right).
