009 Sound System Background Songs are tracks by the music project 009 Sound System that are repeatedly used as the background audio in YouTube videos. The songs "Dreamscape," "With a Spirit" and "Born to be Wasted" are frequently cited as the most prominent examples, having been referred to as the YouTube national anthem.

Origin

On February 22nd, 2007, YouTube launched the AudioSwap^[11] service, which allows video uploaders to replace copyrighted music with licensed tracks.^[9] In September of 2008, the Korean-based web music service Musicshake partnered with YouTube as a song provider for Audioswap.^[10]

The music project 009 Sound System was created by American musician Alexander Perls, who released the first tracks on the compilation album Track One Recordings Vol. 1^[8] on November 18th of that year. Several 009 Sound System songs were included in the Musicshake library and many YouTubers began selecting the tracks in Audioswap, presumably influenced by its placement at the top of the alphabetical list.

On July 10th, 2010, Yahoo Answers^[4] user Birra spanish castle magic asked why so many YouTube videos used 009 Sound System songs as background tracks, to which member inukjuak90 cited their inclusion in the AudioSwap library as a possible explanation. On November 8th, a Facebook^[6] page titled "Ban 009 Sound System from YouTube" was launched. On April 24th, 2011, a Facebook^[5] page declaring 009 Sound System as "YouTube's National Anthem" was created. On September 16th, YouTuber BronzeRatz uploaded a video titled "YouTube National Anthem," which contained a static YouTube logo accompanied by 009 Sound System's "Dreamscape" as the background music.

On November 22nd, Yahoo Answers^[3] user Claudia77-Liz submitted a question asking which 009 Sound System song could be considered the true "YouTube national anthem." On December 22nd, Urban Dictionary^[1] user g0atm0uf submitted an entry for "YouTube national anthem," noting that the phrase is often use mockingly for overused songs on YouTube, particularly those produced by 009 Sound System. On August 28th, 2012, YouTuber e7magic uploaded a video titled "10 Hours of YouTube National Anthem," which contained a looped audio track of 009 Sound System's "With a Spirit" (shown below).

On November 18th, Redditor dvdov submitted a link to Alexander Perls' Wikipedia page to the "Today I Learned" subreddit,^[7] claiming that 009 Sound System often replaced other copyrighted music due to its placement as the first option in Audioswap's alphabetical list.
