About

❄️ U So Icy Ima Glacier Boy refers to a screenshot of a pickup line sent to rapper Saweetie by rapper Quavo, which went viral in October 2020 as part of the How It Started Vs. How It's Going trend. The nonsensical pickup line inspired other Twitter users to try it themselves and share the results on Twitter.

Origin

On October 7th, 2020, Quavo[1] posted two photos on Twitter under the text labels, "HOW I PULLED UP" and "HOW WE COMING," following the format of the How It Started Vs. How It's Going trend that popped up on Twitter in late September (shown below). The first photo is a screenshot of a DM conversation between Saweetie and Quavo. First, Quavo sends a snowflake emoji, to which Saweetie responds with a bowl of ramen emoji. Then, Quavo sends the message, "u so icy Ima glacier boy." The post quickly went viral, gaining over 508 thousand likes and 81 thousand retweets in 2 days.

Spread

Twitter users began pointing out the nonsensical nature of Quavo's pickup line, as well as how bold it is to start with a snowflake emoji. Some Twitter users, curious about how well the pickup line would work if it came from someone other than Quavo, began sending it to other people and posting the results in the comment section of Quavo's tweet, and on Twitter in general. On October 7th, 2020, Twitter user jujuubangzz[2] posted an attempt at the pickup line, resulting in confusion and a block (shown below, left). The post gained over 34 thousand likes and 4.5 thousand retweets in 2 days. On the same day, sandavidcito[3] posted a successful attempt at using the pickup line (shown below, right). The post gained over 14.4 thousand likes and 1.4 thousand retweets in the same span of time.

Some Twitter users posted screenshots of themselves sending the DM to other celebrities, many to Rihanna. Twitter user SkinnieMcremy posted a screenshot of a snowflake emoji in Rihanna's DMs, receiving over 4.3 thousand likes in 2 days (shown below, left). Twitter user Saayjaay did the same, receiving over 913 likes in the same span of time (shown below, right).

As the trend continued to spread, the snowflake emoji saw increased use in reference to Quavo's pickup line. Some women on Twitter started posting about receiving snowflake emojis, including pleas for the snowflake emojis to stop and posts questioning why they hadn't received any snowflake emojis (examples shown below, left and right).
