See The Winner Of August 2024's Meme Of The Month!
And the meme of August 2024 goes to …
He might have gotten silver at the 2024 Summer Olympics, but he is not going to settle for less than gold this time: It's Yusuf Dikeç, the Turkish pistol shooter, who finishes first with over 32.5 percent of total votes! The natural-born shooter from Turkey impressed viewers of the Olympics with his lack of equipment and a relaxed pose, holding his hand in his pocket while hitting his targets and people's hearts. Did we mention he's also a cat guy? He's a cat guy.
I Guess We Doin Circles Now
"A circle? In a triangle factory??" That's right, the two-panel exploitable about a factory worker getting a quick update regarding factory operations gets second place on our monthly poll thanks to nearly 15 percent of the voters. The highly flexible format has been used in all sorts of ways, from making fun of companies that engage in wildly different stuff (looking at you, Michelin) and surreal humor that is covered in layers of meta to funny crossovers with other memes.
Raygun the Australian Olympic Breakdancer
While Olympic shooters were undeniably the biggest meme stars of the 2024 Paris Olympics, their strongest contender was Rachael 'Raygun' Gunn, the Australian breakdancer, who made a huge impression with her moves … just not exactly in a good way. Striving to impress with her artistic approach rather than with her technical skill, Raygun did not quite achieve the results she wanted as her bizarre performance earned her comparisons with a kangaroo, among other things. Love her or hate her, Raygun is here in third place with nearly 9 percent of your votes.
Rainbow Dolphin / Symphony Dolphin
The memes combining dark thoughts with positive imagery are not exactly new, but the latest variation of this trend, called Rainbow Dolphin or Symphony Dolphin, has been a huge hit this past month. Writing out one's depressive thoughts – or simply weird stuff – over images of jolly dolphins jumping out of water against a rainbow in the background has been the thing to do on TikTok in August. And no, the most popular image of a dolphin frolicking in the ocean (seen on the left) is not AI — it's a painting by Hawaii-based artist Christian Riese Lassen! Rainbow dolphin memes score fourth place with 8.5 percent of total votes.
Brazilian Miku / Every Country's Miku
Wrapping up our top five for August 2024 is Brazilian Miku — or rather, every country's Miku at this point. The fun art trend started with artists imagining vocaloid character Hatsune Miku as a young Brazilian woman in a crop top and jean shirts, but it obviously couldn't just stop there. From Brazil, Miku has since traveled all over the world as artists depicted her as a national in every country and place on Earth … even Michigan. Miku's international tour ends up in the fifth spot with 7 percent of total votes.
And now for the memes that didn't believe in the heart of cards and therefore didn't manage to place top five this August: pancreatic cancer not qualifying as an emotion (6.5%), being very demure, very mindful (6.5%), the Jonkler and his evil cart (4%), China's national treasure Xiaopang the Dog (4%), quirkless Deku flipping burgers at Macky Dees (2.5%), Republicans being called weird (2%), South Korean pistol shooter Kim Yeju and her crazy loadout (1%), J.K. Rowling possibly having black mold in her house (1%) and Farbuckle the Goblin and his self-sacrificing kink (0.5%).
Thank you for voting and see you next month!
