Sekiro Wins Game Of The Year At The Game Awards
Somewhere, a man in the sky is Woo-ing in celebration.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice took home Game of the Year at last night's Game Awards, edging out a strong field of nominees that included Death Stranding, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Control, Resident Evil 2, and The Outer Worlds. Sekiro also took home the award for Best Action-Adventure game.
"Sekiro had a lot of difficult elements which made us a little unsure when it came out," said director Hitedaka Miyazaki. "We were both surprised and overjoyed at the reaction we saw."
The award was seen as an upset by some, but fans nevertheless were thrilled at the pick, particularly after the game generated discussion about it possibly being too difficult.

Games are for everyone, and Sekiro would have won even if it had included accessibility options and difficulty modes. Absolutely get fucked with the "git gud" rhetoric.#accessibility #a11y pic.twitter.com/2FvdZqFm7M

The award capped off a trailer-filled night that included looks at the new Xbox, Hellblade II, Ghost of Tsushima, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and many more. Surprisingly, the night did not include an announcement of the next Smash DLC character, as many fans had anticipated.
Other major awards include Disco Elysium winning Best Narrative and Best RPG, Smash Ultimate winning Best Fighting Game, Fire Emblem: Three Houses winning Best Strategy Game, and Death Stranding winning Best Game Direction.

Honestly, the show was kind of a bust this year.

Nobody is seriously watching for the awards. Gamers are the kind of consumers who think the critics are full of bullshit(and they're right). So anybody who was watching it was watching for the trailers, and most of these trailers were of games that weren't very interesting with a few exceptions(Bravely Default 2 and NMH 3). I'm not going to repeat this error, I will check the trailers the next day, not watching this bullshit live anymore.

Everyone Else: It's a good game, but so many others deserved it.
Me: HEIST OF THE CENTURY! IT DEFIED THE ODDS! THIS TRULY IS THE DARK SOULS OF OUT OF NOWHERE WINS!

Gotta say, it's refreshing to see the winning game at an event like this be a difficult single-player game with no DLCs or questionable monetary practices to speak of. That it happened two years in a row with GoW last year is nice as well.
2019 could be considered the year of Souls-likes, if nothing else. Sekiro, The Surge 2, Blasphemous, Remnant: From the Ashes, and even Jedi Fallen Order were all solid titles (Code Vein too, but I've yet to try that one). And I recall people saying this was a niche sub-genre with limited appeal back in Dark Souls 1's heydayโฆ here's hoping it continues to thrive into the new year with Elden Ring and who knows what else on the horizon.
