New 'Sonic The Hedgehog' Movie Trailer Makes The Character Look Way Less Awful
Big cartoony eyes! Non-human cartoony teeth! With just a few simple changes, Paramount Pictures and the team behind the upcoming Sonic actually got people excited about the upcoming silver screen debut of the blue hedgehog, which was frankly unthinkable after the film's human-teeth-filled first trailer made it the laughing stock of the internet. That backlash pushed the release date of the film back to 2020, as director Jeff Fowler announced in May that the team was going to "take a little more time to get Sonic just right." This morning, the world bore witness to the fruits of that labor, as the next Sonic trailer dropped.
The improvement in trailer quality is instantly noticeable. For one, it's not set to "Gangsta's Paradise" for some unknowable reason and is instead set to "Supersonic" by J.J. Fad, which is a stunningly obvious choice in retrospect. It also opens in a realistic rendering of the iconic Sonic stage Green Hill Zone, which helps establish that the movie is actually has some relation to the Sonic universe. And finally, there's Sonic himself, who looks like Sonic.
There are several other things that make the new trailer infinitely better than the old one. The trailer shows off more of Carrey's balls-out wacky performance, making his Robotnik look more like classic Carrey characters such as The Mask and Ace Ventura. James Mardsen looks less embarrassed to be appearing in the film, possibly because he is now no longer acting against an uncanny abomination of animation. There is no more "Uhhhh… Meow?" On the whole, the trailer is a massive leap in quality that's drummed up excitement for the film and actually put Paramount back in people's good graces. Here's how Twitter reacted:
New video(s) soon… but lemme say right now… This… is… GLORIOUS! Super huge respect to the people behind #SonicMovie and especially the animators who worked so hard to make this happen. You made gold (rings) here! This is the best Valentine's Day present I'll ever have. https://t.co/440y3E6vLJ

The trailer has been so successful, Vice wondered if the first trailer was intentionally terrible so that Paramount could pull this off (unlikely, but hey, there are weirder conspiracies).

Cool 'n' all, but I'm busy with work.

Well the design looks a hell of a lot better; Tyson Hesse did God's work fixing that abomination from the April 2019 trailer.
No indication on the overall writing quality, but the new trailer definitely has a much better choice of excerpts than the first one; for better or worse, it perfectly captures the essence of the kinds of movies I remember watching as a kid in the 2000's.
