With the much-talked-about Snyder Cut of Justice League finally coming to HBO Max in 2021, directors of other legendary flops are playing with the idea of getting their true visions to audiences. David Ayer, director of the much-maligned Suicide Squad, mused about the possibility of releasing his cut of the movie, which he says exists and is significantly different from the version fans saw in theaters.

On Sunday, Ayer said (in Spanish) that his cut of Suicide Squad was finished outside of special effects. He also responded to a Twitter user suggesting HBO Max also pick up the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad by saying, "My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The film I made has never been seen."

The cut is rumored to have developed more complex relationships between the main characters, including Deadshot and Harley Quinn becoming a couple and focusing more on the Joker's abuse of Quinn.

The campaign, though not nearly as big as #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, has picked up some traction on social media, as fans of the original or Ayer's oeuvre clamored for a better version of the film.

#ReleaseTheAyerCut is another example of filmmakers attempting to wrestle control from studio execs who they believe ruined their film, a tradition that has gone back as far as Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. The chances of an Ayer Cut release are slim, however, as a sequel called The Suicide Squad, directed by James Gunn, is set to release next year.

This would be very fortelling not just of whoever is in charge of DCEU, but Hollywood as a whole. If both the Snyder and Ayer cut prove to be much better versions of the movies, then it makes me wonder who the fuck is making these dumbfuck decisions over there in LA
